Reformer pilates faq
What is Reformer pilates?
Pilates is a style of fitness class that focuses on core strength, and improving posture and alignment of the spine. You can do pilates exercises on mats on the floor, or on machines. The the most common of these machines is the reformer.
A reformer is a frame fitted with a moving, spring loaded carriage. As you move this carriage against the resistance of the springs, you isolate and target specific muscles or muscle groups. An additional benefit, the reformer’s springs provide resistance throughout an entire movement: your muscles have to work against the springs while lengthening as well as while contracting. This makes it an ideal form of exercise for developing strength and tone without bulk, and why reformer pilates is part of the routine of so many gymnasts and ballerinas.
I’ve never done Reformer before. Do you cater to beginners?
Yes! Absolutely! No prior experience of any kind is needed. Our classes are small, so our instructors can offer you personalised attention.
I’m working on getting fit again, but I haven’t exercised in a while. Will I be OK?
Yes. Our classes accommodate a very wide range of fitness levels, and our instructors can offer modifications to the exercises to adjust the challenge level, and the resistance level on the reformers is adjustable by engaging and disengaging springs. If you have an illness or injury, or are pregnant or have recently given birth, please let your instructor know so they can help you exercise safely.
What should I wear?
Clothes that are comfortable and easy to move in: your normal activewear. We don’t wear shoes in class, and most members prefer to exercise in bare feet, although socks are optional.
Is there anything else I should bring?
You might want to bring a water bottle and a sweat towel, but these are not essential.
